General Information

Where is IIT Patna located?

Presently the Institute is functioning from the premises of the New Government Polytechnic, Patliputra Colony, Patna – 800013, Bihar. However, this is a temporary Campus. It is approximately 9 km from the Patna Airport and 6 km from Patna Junction Railway Station. The Institute is located near Polytechnic More.

How to reach Polytechnic More from Patna airport or Patna Junction railway station?

Taxi is available at charges of Rs 300-350 from the airport and about Rs 150 from the Patna Junction Railway Station. Auto rickshaw is the common transport in Patna. Do you have necessary facilities like a post office, banks and others at your Institute?

A post office is located nearby. There are several banks within a kilometer radius from the Institute. Canara Bank and State Bank of India operate their special counters during Semester Registration, Fee deposition process and for any need of the Institute within the institute premises. There is a good canteen in the Institute.

What about computer terminals and Internet Facility?

There are numerous terminals and a computer laboratory operating within the Institute and all the computers are connected through LAN. The laptops issued to the faculty members are equipped with data card for internet facility at any place.

What about the climate in Patna? Is it too hot during summer?

Possibly, Patna is the most comfortable place in North India. The holy Ganga is a kilometer away from the Institute. Apart from the monsoon months of June to September, the city is least humid compared to many other parts of India. The period March to June is hot summer with average maximum temperature of about 40 while the rest of the year is having temperature ranging between 12 to 28 , which may drop to 4 at winter.

Well! I am afraid of Patna / Bihar. Shall I visit IIT Patna?

You are safe in all respects in IIT Patna. Well trained security guards ar e deployed in the Institute and the hostels. Presently, Patna/Bihar has improved a lot in the context of law and order. The Academics is not affected in any respect by the law and order situation of the surroundin g locality.

In what ways IIT Guwahati is associated with IIT Patna?

Each of the new IITs established by Government of India was mentored by an existing IIT. Hence IIT Guwahati was given charges as mentoring institute for IIT Patna. Presently, IIT Patna has a Director, a Registrar and its full fledged administrative staff.

What are the departments presently existing at IIT Patna?

There are seven departments namely, Department of Computer Science and Engineering,
Department of Electrical Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Chemistry, Department of Mathematics, Department of Physics, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences.

What are the departments where B.Tech programmes are offered?

Presently three departments are offering B.Tech programme at IIT Patna. Students qualified in IIT-JEE exam only can enroll in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering or in the Department of Electrical Engineering or in the Department of Mechanical Engineering depending on his/her All India Rank.

Does IIT Patna presently offering any PhD programme?

Yes, the students have already enrolled for their PhD programme in all the seven departments.

Does IIT Patna have faculty to teach?

Yes, IIT Patna has already recruited outstanding young, energetic and dynamic faculty members. Recently, senior Visiting Professors have also been appointed.

What about the class room teaching?

Each class room is well equipped with LCD, white screen, white board and audio-visual facilities.

What about laboratories?

First year and secondary year laboratories are in place along with a few research laboratories. Other major laboratories and central research facilities are going to be there very soon and they are under process.

Does IIT Patna have central library?

Yes, text books and reference books for B. Tech students and research scholars are in sufficient numbers and the Central library has quite good reference section where E-books are also available.

Does IIT Patna have registered journals, especially online journals?

Yes, IIT Patna has subscription of online journals for each of the department like other established IITs.

Does IIT Patna have computer center?

Yes, it has a computer center with internet facility of 4 Mbps. It opens from morning 9 AM to evening 9PM

What about hostel facilities?

Well furnished accommodation facilities for all the students are available in the hostels near to the institute campus building.

Is there accommodation for girl students?

Yes. Accommodation for girl students is also available.

What is the arrangement for food?

Boys Hostel has the provision of mess, run by caterer. Food services have been outsourced from the boys’ hostel mess to the girls’ hostel. The Institute ensures that healthy food is provided at a reasonable rate.

Does the institute take care of the students’ progress?

Yes, institute has appointed faculty members to mentor the students in group.

What will be the living expenditure?

The expenditure pattern is similar to that of other big cities. Apart from the Institute fees which are payable every semester, the anticipated expense per month should be about Rs 1700 including messing charges.

Is the institute running any cultural programme?

Yes, cultural programmes as well as spiritual programme at the institute premises are being run. Yoga Rishis are invited for such spiritual programme. In addition to these, the Institute organizes Cultural Fest in the month of October and Annual Fest in the month of April. Students organize programme for Teach ers’ Day, Freshers’ Day, Diwali, Ganesh Puja
etc. The Institute organizes Yoga and Music classes. The Institute has Literary Club, Environmental Club, Robotics Club etc.

Are there recreational facilities?

Grounds are available for volleyball and basketball. Table tennis is also available. A modern multi-purpose gym is also functioning in the hostel premises.

What about the sports activity?

Students activity center organizes sports activities among the students in each year and participants are awarded certificates.

What about medical facilities?

Twenty four hours primary medical facilities along with medical ambulance (fully equipped with all
medical equipments such as Oxygen, Stretcher etc) are available in the institute campus. OPD are provided and a doctor is available for any medical needs of students and staff members of the IIT Patna. The Institute has also made suitable arrangements with Mahavir Vatsalya Hospital in Patna in the case of emergency hospitalization.

What about the security system of the institute campus and student hostels?

Top cadre security staff has been out sourced. Securities are engaged for twenty four hours to both the institute campus and the student hostels.
