Indian Institute of Technology Patna is one of the new IITs established by an act of parliament on August 06, 2008. It runs from its transit campus in Patliputra Colony, Patna

Patna which was known as Patliputra has been a center of knowledge since long has been attracting visitors and scholars from many parts of the world such as China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Sri Lanka, among others. This has been a land of visionaries. Some of the historical legends from this region include Lord Gautam Buddha, Lord Mahavir, Guru Gobind Singh, the famous astronomer Aryabhata and the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

IIT Patna has three schools – (1) School of Engineering consisting of the following Departments namely, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering (2) School of Basic Sciences consisting of Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics Departments (3) School of Humanities consisting of Humanities & Social Science Department.

The transit campus of IIT Patna is located on the campus of Navin Government Polytechnic in Patliputra Colony Patna. The institute is approximately seven kilometers away from the Patna Junction and eight kilometers from the Loknayak Jai Prakash Narayan Airport Patna. The permanent campus of the Institute is coming up at Bihta which is approximately 34 kms from Patna.

The institute has developed modern facilities that are fully equipped with state of the art machines and technologies to run the following programs:

• B.Tech in three Departments such as Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering
• M.Tech in multi-disciplinary streams in three specializations namely (1) Mechatronics jointly offered by Departments of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, (2) Mathematics & Computing jointly offered by Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science & Engineering and (3) Nano Science & Technology jointly offered by Departments of Physics and Chemistry
• PhD programs in all the eight departments: (a) Engineering departments: Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, (b) Basic Science departments: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, (c) Humanities and Social Sciences

As of August 2012, IIT Patna has four hundred fifteen students enrolled in its B Tech programs,thirty M.Tech students and ninety eight Ph.D students.

As of July 2012 IIT Patna is currently running with sixty three members in the faculty and the staff strength of forty one. This number is expected to increase as the Institute is growing at a steady pace. The members of the faculty have a wide range of academic and research experience. They come with academic and research training from various institutes of excellence within the country and abroad. The recent publication records of the faculty with several practical constraints appear to be outstanding. It includes many national and international journals of repute. This includes a wide range and huge number of conference publication and participation. IIT Patna has more than 150 research papers published in refereed international journals and more than 100 papers presented in national/international conferences during 2008-2011.
