Prof. Preetam Kumar is a distinguished faculty member in the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Patna. With expertise in wireless communication, signal processing, MIMO systems, and 5G/6G technologies, he has made significant contributions to research and academia. He holds a Ph.D. from IIT Kharagpur and is actively involved in cutting-edge research, mentoring students, and advancing communication technologies through funded projects and scholarly publications.
Leading Researcher in Wireless Communication and application of AI in Wireless Networks
The Wireless Communication Research Lab (WCRL) at IIT Patna, led by Prof. Preetam Kumar in the Department of Electrical Engineering, is committed to advancing the field of next-generation wireless communication systems through both theoretical and experimental research. The lab primarily focuses on addressing open challenges at the physical layer, aiming to enhance communication efficiency, reliability, and adaptability in complex and dynamic wireless environments.
WCRL’s research covers a broad range of modern technologies, including Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS)-assisted communication, Index Modulation (IM), Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), and Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC). In addition to conventional signal processing techniques, the lab also integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) methods into wireless system design and optimization. These data-driven approaches are applied for tasks such as channel estimation, resource allocation, beamforming, and network adaptation, enabling intelligent and adaptive communication frameworks. The research workflow at WCRL typically begins with mathematical modeling and analytical validation, followed by simulation-based evaluation using statistical and AI/ML-based system models. Once the theoretical models are verified, the team transitions to hardware implementation using platforms like the NI-PXI (National Instruments PXIe) machine for real-time testing and prototyping.
WCRL is actively engaged in several government-sponsored projects and industry collaborations, focusing on technology development and transfer to practical applications. The lab has also filed multiple patents and consistently publishes high-quality research in leading journals and conferences. Through its interdisciplinary work combining signal processing, wireless communication, and AI-driven design, WCRL continues to play a vital role in shaping the future of intelligent and energy-efficient communication systems.

Prof. Preetam Kumar (Senior Member, IEEE) is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Patna. He completed his PhD in Wireless Cellular Communications from IIT Kharagpur and brings over 26 years of experience in teaching, research, and industry. His research focuses on Physical Layer issues in Wireless Communications, Application of AI in 5GA and 6G Communications, and RIS-assisted wireless communication (RIS-NOMA, RIS-FD) for next generation communications. He has published more than 150 papers in high peer-reviewed journals and conferences, holds three patents, and has successfully completed several government- and industry-sponsored projects.
Prof. Kumar’s contributions have been recognized with awards such as Best Paper Awards at IEEE GLOBECOM 2023 and IEEE ICMOCE 2023. He has guided many PhD, MTech, and BTech students and currently supervises ten doctoral candidates. Prof. Kumar is also a visiting researcher at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. He serves as a consultant to Tejas Networks, Bangalore; Rakuten Mobile, Japan; and Simnovus, USA.
Beyond research, he has held significant leadership roles, including Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Member of the Board of Governors at IIT Patna. He currently serves as an editor for Springer’s Wireless Networks and Wireless Personal Communications journals, and has also organized major conferences, including serving as General Chair of NCC 2023 at IIT Guwahati. Through his teaching, research, and mentorship, Prof. Kumar continues to make a significant impact on the advancement of wireless communication technologies.
